My kindness story is when I was sick my students were super kind for the sub. They also did all their work!

Here at the Jim Tangeman Center, one of the classrooms (room 4!) has put up kind words and motivating phrases around the school for students and staff to see. It has really brightened everyone's day, and inspired the younger students.

No supermercado a senhora que estava no caixa tinha a cara fechada. Olhei com compaixão e percebi que estava muito cansada. Quando fui atendida, enfatizei o cumprimento e falei um pouco com ela. No final parecia mais leve.

This week’s guest letter comes to you from Floridian Barrie Byron, who wrote the first Kindness Map guest letter back in August and who has enthusiastically supported the Kindness Map ever since its debut almost a year ago.

On a recent visit to the Big Island of Hawaii, I was thrilled to be invited to my artist friend Matt's 70th birthday party. At this milestone celebration, we enjoyed some wonderful storytelling, a super fun dance band, a delicious taco buffet, and, best of all, we got to play a part in the best gift of all, which Matt gave. When we entered the party, we signed in at the Moose Lodge and received a door-prize ticket. Door prize? I thought, excited, since I always expect to be the lucky one.

The gift was on display: Matt's signature piece, a Wish Keeper™ vessel.

It sat on a distinctive base with a lid shaped like a piece of bamboo, representing strength and flexibility. The ancient symbol on the seal represented good fortune and abundance. Each Wish Keeper sculpture is unique, emerging with distinct characteristics, just like each of us. The Wish Keeper on display was gleaming and colorful. We guests were filled with hope. One of us would win tonight!

The anticipation kept us all engaged. I didn’t win, but I did win. We all did. We witnessed the gift of giving. Happiness was ours as we witnessed a gracious receiver and a generous giver.

Kindness happens in all forms. We can practice kindness by graciously receiving large gifts, like a Wish Keeper, or small everyday gifts, like a compliment. We can give generously any time, a little or a lot, with our whole hearts.

Postscript from Marcia

This issue of the Kindness Map newsletter wraps up the weekly publishing cadence that we’ve maintained for 42 weeks now. I’m grateful to everyone who took time to write guest letters. The guest letters—32 in all—have all been gifts, reminding us, the lucky readers, of the infinite variety of things any of us can do for others and ourselves to make life worth living.

Although this newsletter won’t arrive in your inbox regularly anymore, I’m ready to send another newsletter out any time one of us has a kindness story we need to share. Send your write-ups to me at info@kindness-map.com.

Meanwhile, the Kindness Map abides. Keep dropping hearts and sharing stories. Check in there when you need a reminder of kindness in the world. We need each other to keep seeing kindness.
